Mustangs host NOSSA Tennis

After two postponements due to rain, NOSSA Tennis finally happened at MSS this past week. It was a damp and cold morning, but spirits were high as nine schools from across north-eastern Ontario met to compete, including three different exchange students from Europe! Several athletes from North Bay took home first place finishes, but Ava Corbiere and Emery Watson placed second in girls’ doubles, qualifying them for the OFSAA finals in Toronto in early November.

Emery was also the main driver behind the school fundraiser around the event for Breast Cancer Research and many athletes and MSS students wore pink for the day. Final fundraising numbers are still to come.

Finishing in third place were Ludo Costa in girls’ singles, Anders Watson and Jonah Balfe in boys’ doubles, Rylan Pennie and Amy Smith in mixed doubles. Fourth place finishes were also locked in by Dylan Kuntsi in boys’ singles and Nova Debassige and Isaac Lock in mixed doubles.

Overall, these combined finishes gave Manitoulin S.S. enough team points to win the NOSSA team banner for the fall of 2015. Coach Chris Theijsmeijer is super proud of the entire team. Way to go Mustangs, and good luck to Ava and Emery at OFSAA!

OUA Rowing!

The Ontario University Athletics rowing championships were held at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course in St. Catharines over the weekend. Brooke Gibeault in just her second year of rowing for Western had a tremendous regatta winning the junior varsity double class with her teammate, Charlotte DaPonte. Their scull was in a tight battle to make the A final. They led at 1000m but finished fourth, but the time still stood up as fourth fastest. The pair changed some tactics for the final and led from start to finish!

Zoey Redmond and her doubles partner Angelique Obrecht won the B finals and came 6th overall with time! Congratulations as well to fellow Islanders Morgan Green and Xavi Mara who were also competing.

Panther Points!

The U11 Manitoulin Panthers played their hearts out at their first tournament outing, the Porcupine Ice Breaker in Timmins, making it all the way to semi-finals on Sunday in a hard-fought battle. This team continues to grow and improve with every game a clear sign they’re moving in the right direction.

The U13 Panther squad faced tough competition and worked hard at the same tournament but came up short in round robin play.

The U15 Panthers had an impressive showing at the Ice Breaker, finishing round robin play with a strong 3-1 record. The Panthers rolled through early competition with wins over the Northshore Thundercats (7–3), Hearst HLK (9–0), and Cochrane Chargers (15–3), before falling 4–1 to the PMHA Jr. Gold Kings in their final round robin matchup.

Their efforts earned them a second-place finish in their division and a spot in the semifinals, where they faced the Thundercats once again. In a hard-fought back and forth battle, the Panthers came up just short, falling 6–5 in a nail-biter.

Our U18 Lady Panthers were in Kapuskasing for the first Superweekend of the 25/26 NOWHL season. The ladies proved themselves to be a powerful force as they swept all four games in this series. The Manitoulin Lady Panthers beat the Nipigon Elks, the host team Kapuskasing Jaguars, the Almaguin Gazelles and the North Bay Jr. Lakers. The future looks bright for all the Panthers! Keep up the hard work, all.
