There are only a handful of days left before summer technically starts on Friday, June 20, the Summer Solstice. However, MSS students know that summer really begins on June 25, the last day of exams. Yes, we are in exam season, Mustangs! Next week, all extra-curricular activities that are still running will shut down to allow students to prepare for finals and finish their culminating projects.
With the end of the year approaching quickly, there are a few staple events: senior prom and graduation. Graduation was held on Thursday, June 12 and saw 97 Mustangs walking the stage. The gym was decked out with black and gold decorations and jam-packed with the families and friends of graduates. The evening lasted about two hours and concluded with cupcakes and snacks made by MSS’s Foods classes.
The next day, Friday, June 13, was the senior prom! What made this day special was that it was hosted not in a hall, but on a boat. At six o’clock, students began to arrive at the dock in Little Current. Those walking by saw a flurry of colourful dresses, shoes and ties. At 7 pm, students boarded the boat, rented from North Channel Cruise Lines, and they set sail. The Manitoulin Swing Bridge swung to let them pass, and then they headed up to Strawberry Island. During their journey, a barbecue meal was served and music was played. Students ate their meals, walked around the deck and swayed to some songs. Overall, the evening was certainly memorable for this year’s graduating class. MSS is hoping to make this boat cruise prom a tradition.

MSS is taking over the ice bucket challenge! On Monday, June 16, students will gather outside and pour ice water over their heads. Why? To raise awareness for student mental health! For every five students who participated, they could nominate one teacher to participate in the challenge, too. This event was brought to MSS by Headstrong, a student-led mental health awareness group at school. As we head into exams, it’s important to remember to look out for student wellness. If you know someone who is a student, make sure to check in. This can be a very stressful time with end-of-year activities, projects and exams.
That is all for this week! Until next time, go, Mustangs, go!
