The very day Mindemoya announced its water supply would be temporarily unavailable the township became partially submerged and declared a state of emergency due to widespread flooding. Oh, the terrible irony of it all. My biggest question around these floods is: why was the municipality not better prepared around this? Surely, we should have anticipated that this large post-storm accumulation of snow would eventually melt and that the melting snow, paired with the seasonal rain would cause flooding. Am I wrong in thinking the U-boat commander should have had a contingency plan here? Now our already compromised infrastructure and communities are even more at risk, homeowners and businesses must suffer more losses and expenses. Sink or swim? And what about Bob? And the youth baseball tourneys? Today is April showers day; I sure hope by the time you are all reading this the waters have receded, you have mitigated some or most of the flood damage and you are able to paddle up, saddle up, put your game faces on, keep calm and carry on getting ready for the busy season next month. ‘Toulin never let a little weather get in the way; we pool our resources, we help each other, we do health checks and wellness checks on our friends and neighbours, we sandbag, haybale, pivot and press on. If the waters rise again, remember to stay safe and “just keep swimming.” If you’re taking the low-road, high-road or the back road, bring a smelt net, happy hydroplaning and mind the gap.
