Gladys passed away on December 17, 2025 at Golden Birches Terrace at the age of 89. Darling wife of Blair Sterling; much loved mother of Linda Nyman Johnston (Phil), Fred Nyman (Sloane) and Doug Nyman (Andra Ross); grandma to Matthew Johnston (Missy), Ian Johnston and Cole Nyman; and GiGi to Atticus Johnston. Gladys leaves behind her sister-in-law Pat Gray and many nieces and nephews. Her marriage to Blair in 2017 increased her family significantly with the addition of his children Lynn, Stan, Theresa, Brent, Cheryl and Charlene and over 50 of his descendants spanning four generations. Gladys is predeceased by her parents Frederick and Gladys Gray, siblings Fred Gray, Marilyn Kravec, Margaret Newman and Carolyn Gray. She had many fond memories of her husbands who predeceased her, Ed Nyman (father of her children) and Watson Slomke (survived by his daughter Carla). Gladys was the last surviving member of her generation of the Matinenda Road Nyman clan, having been predeceased by Ed’s parents and all of his siblings and spouses. Gladys enjoyed her time working in secretarial positions at Blind River Public School, where she was known as Mrs. Nyman, and at Cameco. She considered Zion United Church in Thessalon her church home during the 25 years she resided in Thessalon. She was Envelope Steward, Church Treasurer and spear-headed the hugely successful 90th anniversary celebration of the church.Family and friends were invited to visit at Menard Funeral Home in Blind River on Monday, December 22, 2025 from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service was held at Menard Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at 11 am. Spring interment Pine Grove Cemetery. To honour Gladys’ love of colour, please come dressed in whatever colour brings you joy. In lieu of flowers, donations to Golden Birches Family Council would be appreciated by the family.
