Meet the candidate: Green’s Himal Hossain’s youth: resilience, hard work and community

MANITOUIN—Himal Hossain is running for the riding of Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt for the Green Party of Canada.

“My story begins with my parents, who came to Canada with hopes of building a better life,” Himal Hossain explained. “Growing up in a household where resilience, hard work and community were at the heart of everything, I learned early on that true strength comes from lifting others up. I was raised to value responsibility, fairness, and compassion—values that have guided me through every stage of my life.”

Mr. Hossain calls Azilda home. “Living in this incredible community has deepened my appreciation for the people, the land and the sense of belonging that makes Northern Ontario so special. Whether it’s supporting local initiatives or simply connecting with neighbors, I’m constantly reminded that real change starts at the community level.”

Mr. Hossain said his commitment to helping others extends beyond his professional life. “As a responder with 988, I’ve had the privilege of being there for people in moments of crisis, offering support, empathy and understanding when it’s needed most. This experience has strengthened my dedication to advocating for mental health awareness and accessibility and it’s a cornerstone of my platform as I step forward to represent our community.”

Mr. Hossain said that over the years, working as a human resources business partner in the energy sector has given him a front-row seat to how industries impact both people and the environment. “I’ve learned that economic growth and environmental stewardship don’t have to be at odds—we can build a future where both thrive. But we need leaders who are willing to take bold steps to make that vision a reality.”

“That’s why I’m running for the Green Party,” he said. “I’m not just talking about change—I’m ready to lead it.”

He said the Green Party pledges to: invest in clean energy solutions that create sustainable, meaningful jobs; support grassroots initiatives that strengthen local businesses and communities; make mental health services accessible so that no one has to struggle alone; and reform education to prepare future generations to be environmental and social leaders.

“I believe in a future where Manitoulin and communities across Northern Ontario thrive—where we protect the beauty of our environment, support the mental and emotional well-being of our people and create opportunities that leave no one behind,” said Mr. Hossain.

“This isn’t just about politics,” he added. “It’s about building a future where unity, sustainability and compassion define who we are as a community.”
