Premier Doug Ford helps recognize National Newspaper Week with The Expositor

LITTLE CURRENT—Every year, during the first full week of October, news media publishers across Canada celebrate National Newspaper Week and this year, The Expositor was privileged to have Ontario Premier Doug Ford join the Island’s community newspaper in recognizing the critically important newspaper journalism plays in the reality in which we live today.

The Expositor gifted a copy of the October 8 edition of the paper to the premier while he was in a media scrum with provincial news outlets at the Manitoulin swing bridge.

“Do I get to read this one?” the premier asked while opening the pages.

“That’s what I love about these community newspapers,” he said. “They have everything in it. You can look through it, you get to know what’s going on, everything from real estate costs to everything.”

“It’s still affordable real estate,” he exclaimed in delight.

According to News Media Canada, fact-checking encourages Canadians, especially students and young people, to question sources, think critically and engage more thoughtfully with current events.

National Newspaper Week, October 5 to 11, is an annual opportunity to recognize the role that newspapers and their sites play in providing Canadians with credible, factual news and spotlight why news media continues to be a trusted source of information that is critical to our democracy.

Local newspapers deliver vital information to Canadians every day, connecting local communities across the country. In fact, four in five people in Canada (81 percent) read newspapers each week—in either print or digital format.

National Newspaper Week is a chance to reflect on the essential service newspapers provide with diverse, local, original content that cannot be found anywhere else.

To celebrate National Newspaper Week, News Media Canada created a custom font entitled, ‘Champions,’ available to all Canadians for free download. Designed with both print and digital platforms in mind the Champions Font honours newspapers’ history while looking forward to a bright and multi-platformed future.

Inspired by the essential service that newspapers provide, the Champions Font highlights the power of words and the people behind the newspapers who use them to communicate essential information to Canadians each and every day. These real-life champions keep our democracy thriving through a vibrant and independent news media.

Champions is a geo-humanist font that incorporates both humanistic traits—which mimic hand motions reflecting the craft and artistry that goes into producing credible news each day—and highly geometric figures—which represent the structure and rigour of fact-checking, editing and producing high-quality credible content newspapers are known for.

The font can be downloaded at: nmc-mic.ca.
