Panther Points!

The U18 Lady Panthers have done it! They have secured their spot in provincials in April by defeating the U18 North Bay Lakers in 2 straight games! Goalie Ciera Sokoloski secured a shutout in Game 2, with goals from Zee Toulouse (assisted by Ava Corbiere), Zahara Dubé (from Emery Watson) and Ava Corbiere (assisted by Megan Roszel). The girls capped off their big 3-0 win with a celebration for their senior players, Zee Toulouse, Zahara Dubé, Tessa McGillis-Prior and Hope Eshkibok.

Sunday saw lots of action at the NEMI Rec Centre as the U13 Panthers played a double-header against the Sudbury Wolves. Game 1 ended in a 1-1 tie with Boston Abotossaway setting up Oliver Wilding for a goal. Game 2 was another nail-biter ending in a 3-3 tie, with goals from Matthew Debassige, Boston Abotossaway (assisted by Parker Polden-Woodley) and Boston Abotossaway again (assisted by Oliver Wilding and Maximus Panamick). The U15 Panthers closed out the weekend with a 7-0 victory over the Copper Cliff Reds, as they remain undefeated and in first place in league play.

Both the U13 and U15 squads are heading to their playoff tournaments this weekend in Sudbury. Go Panthers!

Volleyball Manitoulin

V-Ball on the Island has been having quite a season in secondary school volleyball (that starts with the girls as the boys play basketball). The Mustang girls have been dominant in NSSSA ‘A’ and NOSSA, winning silver. The Wiikwemkoong High School have had a great season in the ‘B’ division (for lower enrollment schools).

The WHS Warriors Girls Volleyball team played well and beat W.C. Eaket 2 in their NSSSA B Semifinal action on Feb. 14th. They moved on to play 1st place team, La Renaissance in the NSSSA Championship game.  Playing a best 3 out of 5 match, the team held on until the fourth set, losing 25-22.  Coaches Jillian Peltier and Stephanie Mandamin are so proud of what the team accomplished this year.  Congratulations to all players on an amazing season!

Members of the team include: Baybee Bryant, Mikayla Denis-Servant (captain), Taiya Gonawabi, Clytie Mishibinijima, Mila Odjig, Cassidy Peltier, Tenille Shawanda, Carlynn Simon, Lena Trudeau, Taylor Trudeau and Ava Wakegijig. Special thanks to Liam Wassengeso for his assistant coaching support this season.

On the guys’ side the Warriors Boys Basketball wrapped up on Friday, February 21 with the team competing at the NOSSA B Championship at W.C. Eaket in Blind River.  The team lost to ES Champlain in their first game and beat Northern Secondary in semi-finals to move on to the Championship game.  A hard-fought battle against Champlain for a second time led the boys to a 2nd place NOSSA finish. Congratulations to all players on a record-setting season for Coaches John Capin and TJ Wabegijig. Team members include Carmine Wemigwans, Nicho Simmons, Javier Salas-Cooper, Jesse Dokum, Noah Jackson, Hudson Jocko, Ethan Flamand, Zander Shawongonabe, Jaden Manitowabi, Conner Hill, Torin Jones, Aydin Pheasant and Radim Eshkawkogan.

Brodie Pennie is just a rookie, and yet was part of a record-setting 4 x 800m UNB Reds team over the weekend. Indoors at the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Track and Field Championships in St. John NB, Brodie and team ran the 3.2 km in 7:39!

Meanwhile at the Ontario University Athletics Track and Field Championships this past weekend there were a number of local athletes putting their winter training to the test. Congratulations to Saraya Eshkawkogan, Alan Wilkin and TJ Green!

Local leads Rooks

Kohyn Eshkawkogan with his assist yesterday against the London Knights, now has the outright lead for all rookie Defensemen in scoring! Despite battling a shoulder injury, he is also 10th in scoring amongst all 2008 born players, and 18th in scoring amongst all rookies (2007s/2008s-forwards and defence).

Manitoulin Marks-people!

At the Zone 24 Marksmanship Competition our local 348 Manitoulin RCSCC (Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps) took their steady hands and hearts to the podium. MC Laszlo Vernarsky took first place in the Open, PO2 Liam McLean– 2nd place Open, LC John McLean – 3rd place Junior. Bravo to the Zulu Team and Coaches SLt Miranda Mackay and Civilian instructor retired, Lt (Navy) Denis Blake. A special thank you from the unit to Denis for, “all his hard work with the marksmanship team over the years, what a way to retire from coaching.”
