Anishnaabe women gathered at Debajehmujig Theatre for an evening of wisdom and empowerment. Speakers shared journeys of leadership and healing through culture. Organized by Sophie Pheasant, the network aims to lift up Anishnaabe-kwewag across the region, with the next event set for fall.
MANITOWANING—Laughter echoes and charges the room with an uplifting energy as Anishnaabe kweok (women) from Mnidoo Mnising gather for an evening filled with wisdom, love and encouragement shared between one another at Debajehmujig Theatre on April 23.
As the room filled, the evening was opened by Tammy Nahwegahbow/Waabanang Kwe from Whitefish River First Nation (Wawaskinigaa). “As women we are told to take up less space. We are so beautiful and we are here. This is what we have to keep working towards, lifting each other up even in the rooms we aren’t in.”
Lynda A. Trudeau/Biimshkwehzeh Chichok from Wiikwemkoong started off the evening’s lineup of inspirational kweok speakers with her powerful share on leadership rooted in cultural identity.
