BIRCH ISLAND—Jean Jacko from Whitefish River First Nation always thought about opening a coffee house and one day decided to bring her dream to reality. Ms. Jacko shares her passion for connection and talks about how a childhood nickname from Mom became her place of joy, community and yummy wholesome food.
Ms. Jacko was presented with property to rent and with the support of her husband, she created her coffee house, Jean the Bean, and opened its doors in October 2025.
“There was nowhere to go around here; you had to drive into town to get a nice cup of coffee and to communicate with people,” she said. “So we bought and dropped off six picnic tables, got the equipment, and we just did it. It all came together bit by bit.”
