Island Elementary
Track and Field!

Manitoulin held its annual track and field meet over two days last week. The field events took place Tuesday at MSS, and the races day took place at the racetrack in Manitowaning on Thursday.

The breaking news occurring on each day was that two records were broken! Nova Debassige has become a very well-rounded athlete and has seen success in all elementary sports; however T and F has the historical stats to prove it! On Tuesday, the Central Manitoulin Public School student busted a triple-jump record that fellow Eagle Kennedy Lanktree set 14 years ago! Nova put together a hop, step and jump of 9.22m, eclipsing the historical 9.00m mark! In Assiginack, on the big track, Nova broke the record for the 200m that Arabella Otosquaiob (LCPS) set just last year. She zipped through the distance in a brief, 29.74s!

Nova and her brother Drew (see results below!) have been both training with Robert Esmie’s club, Air Blastoff, in Sudbury for their 3rd year! They will be competing this weekend at the District H Legion meet at Laurentian and Nova will be doing a couple of other meets in southern Ontario this summer.

The following are all the age-group, medal-winners. In the nine-and-under girls’ division, there was a tie for gold with Isabel Abotossaway (LCPS) and Mya Moggy (APS) each earning 8 points! Lakeview’s Mikayla Bondy amassed seven points for Silver and Rose Karn (LCPS), Bronze with 6. The 9 year old boys’ group Alex Woods of C.C. McLean had a near-perfect, 11 points for gold, edging teammates, Dawson Honess with silver and Arlo Menzies who tied with Wasse Abin Pontiac’s Rowen Lecuyer with Bronze.

The 10-year-old girls’ group was very competitive with six athletes sharing the top-three spots. Lauren Bomberry (Pontiac) and Ashlyn Pegelo (LCPS) evened out for the gold. Danika Peltier (Pontiac) alone won silver. Bronze was divided between Emma Larabie (LCPS), Janessa Trudeau-Lewis (Pontiac) and Sulla Sheppard (CMPS). The Boys’ division gold went to CMPS’s Drew Debassige with a perfect-12 points for gold. Memphis Gaiashk (Pontiac) and Tate Abotossaway (LCPS) shared silver and Walter Weber (APS) took the bronze medal.

Ayleana McDermid (APS) was the top 11-year-old Girl with 11 points. Brenna Pollard was silver taking 10 points. Jordyn Corbiere (LCPS) and Rowyn Pfeifer (CCM) won bronze. The Boys’ class featured Jack Bentley (LCPS) Gold, Jayden Huang (APS) Silver and Oliver Wilding (LCPS) Bronze.

In the 12 year-old classes, Kailyn Inglis (LCPS) took gold for the girls. Jenny Wright  (CCM) and Miah Hughson (APS) won silver and Emma Chaytor (CCM), bronze. C.C. McLean’s Rowan McCann was golden, with 11 points, Xavier Eshkawkogan (LCPS), silver; Oliver Symons (CMPS) shared bronze with Boston Abotossaway (LCPS).

Finally, the last Island Elementary Track and Field results for the 13-plus groups. Nova Debassige (CMPS) won her events for 12 points. Myla Edralin (LCPS) was Silver and tied with Bronze was Little Current’s Brooke Simon and Hailey Debassige. On the guys’ side, Jesse Cooper (CMPS) and Finn Flanagan (CCM) tied with Gold. LCPS teammates, Nathan Quackenbush and Casey Bowerman shared Silver and Collin Campbell (CCM), Bronze.

The Little Current Public School Coyotes won the overall, team title with C.C. McLean in second and Central Manitoulin, third. When taking into account, school populations, CC McLean was first in the per-capita standings and Assiginack, second and LCPS, 3rd!

MTB in London

Manitoulin’s mountain biking youth continue to represent us well at Provincial level meets. A pair of locals from Little Current were up, down and all-over London’s Boler Mountain. Although not as technically challenging as their home course Jfeatures a fair amount of climbing.

The short-track (XCC) races on Saturday were fast and intense, just 20 minutes of all-out effort. While they are a competition in their own right, they also determine the front-row, start positions for Sunday’s longer Olympic-distance (XCO) race. Nathan Quackenbush pushed hard for a 7th place finish in the U15 XCC, earning himself a good starting position for Sunday. He held his own in a tough field and crossed the line 8th in the XCO.

Bradley Slaght had a strong ride in his, clinching a spot on the podium with a 3rd place finish in the U19 Sport division! Congratulations, guys!
