Column: MSS Kids in the Hall

The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and summer break is just around the corner. The only thing in the way? Exams! But not for much longer. The regular school year officially ended on Friday, June 20, with exams starting the same day. The exam season ends on Wednesday, June 25, and that is when all students are officially out of school. Best of luck on exams, Mustangs!

The last week of school saw the quieting-down of hallways and the completion of culminating projects. The guidance office, in an effort to ensure all students are provided for this summer, was handing out care kits for students that included items like deodorant, toothpaste, body wash, feminine hygiene products and more. Thank you to all of those who contributed to these kits!

Finally, a note from the author:

Writing this column has been my job for the past three years, though it has turned into more of a ritual for me, something to keep me grounded when life was hectic. Throughout my time with The Manitoulin Expositor, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know my own school and its students better. Something equally as special also happened: I got out into the community to cover events that are important to them. For that, I will always be grateful.

It is now time for me to graduate and pass the role on! I initially started when I was in Grade 10, very excited about this job, but somewhat unsure. Now I’m leaving this position with memories and lessons that I will carry with me to McMaster University next year, where I will be studying Leadership and Civic Studies, and Political Science. I hope to continue pursuing writing and journalism in university and throughout my life.

Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who reads my column. It always made my day when I would run into someone and they’d say, “you’re the girl who writes for the newspaper!” You truly made this job feel like what I was doing mattered.

So, as I send in an article to the Expositor for the last time (?), I will leave you with what I said during the MSS graduation this year: “if you approach life with a narrow perspective, you’ll miss out on the whole picture.” Not only does this sentiment come in handy for reporters, it makes your life a lot more interesting.

And so, for the last time, go, Mustangs, go!

EDITOR’S NOTE: We at The Expositor wish to thank Alex for her years of being our Kid in the Hall. You were a pleasure to work with and to watch grow into the incredible young woman you have become. Keep shining, Alex! We can’t wait to see where you will go!
