Friends of the Mindemoya Old School hold golf tournament

MINDEMOYA—The Friends of Mindemoya Old School (FOMOS) golf tournament, held last Friday at Brookwood Brae Golf Course was a huge success.

“I would like to thank everyone for coming out to play today,” said Ian MacKenzie, main organizer of the event. As part of the FOMOS fundraising committee he said, “We welcome everyone here to our first annual golf tournament. This event has been very successful with 15 teams (in the four-person scramble format), 58 golfers and 73 people on hand for dinner.”

“More importantly we would like to thank the 47 different sponsors of the event,” stated Mr. MacKenzie. He said several holes on the course for the tournament were sponsored as well as providing monetary support, golf prizes and door prizes.

Alison McAllister and Ian MacKenzie of the Friends of Mindemoya Old School (FOMOS) present Anna Murdoch with a prize at the group’s first annual golf tournament. The tournament was held at Brookwood Brae golf course in Mindemoya.

FOMOS member Alison McAllister noted that each table set up for dinner had a typed list of all the sponsors of the event.

“I would like to tell you about the FOMOS committee vision,” said Ms. McAllister. “We are attempting to reestablish the Mindemoya Old School, which is over 100 years old, into an artist/artisan’s centre and older adult senior connection centre. This would benefit the community.”

Jim Smith, a FOMOS member, acknowledged that Robert Chappell and Mr. MacKenzie spearheaded the event held last week.

Ms. McAllister on behalf of FOMOS took the opportunity to thank Kelly Slann and her team from Brookwood Brae for “doing a fantastic job” in hosting the tournament, and a wonderful dinner, as well as Red Seal Chef Jodie Elliott and her crew from Prepped Manitoulin for preparing the lunch and providing desserts for the dinner.

As for the tournament itself, prizes were handed out to the team which had the lowest gross score, an impressive seven under par 65 (18 holes) for the team of Drew Burrowes, Josh Robinson, Billy Biederman and Boston Thibault.

The prizes for the shot closest to the pin was won by Janyn Towns on the women’s side and Jim Vardon on the men’s side. The closest to the rope prizes went to Anna Murdoch and Derek Tilly.

As well, many sponsor prizes and door prizes were drawn after the tournament was completed.
