ASSIGINACK TOWNSHIP—One person was taken into custody by the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) after a standoff on Monday, November 17.
“We received a request for support from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), who had been involved in an investigation of an individual who had a firearm,” explained OPP Provincial Constable Berkley Parisien of the Manitoulin OPP.
“We received the call for support at 2:30 pm, to respond to the area of Bidwell Road and Pine Lake Road in Assiginack,” said Constable Berkley. She pointed out officers had been initially called to support the MNR which was engaged in an investigation with the individual involved who was then observed to be in possession of a firearm.
“The individual then barricaded themselves in a trailer,” continued Constable Parisien. With the serious nature of the incident, the OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT), UCCM Anishinabek Police Service, MNR, OPP Canine Unit were called in to assist, she said. The operation also included the use of remote piloted aircraft systems.
“The incident was safely resolved at around 6 pm,” said Constable Parisien who noted the individual, a 39-year-old male, is from Assiginack.
Police confirmed the person was charged, the specific charges and the individual’s name were not released. Constable Parisien said this information and the name of the individual could not be released yet.
