MSS Kids in the Halls

Welcome back Mustangs! And welcome to any new Mustangs! For those of you that didn’t notice there is a new writer of ‘Kids In The Hall’ this year. For anyone that doesn’t know me, my name is Rachael Orford. Some may recognise me (and my jokes) from a previous column I wrote for The Recorder entitled, ‘Colts Going Strong!’

There are a few new additions to the staff of Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) this year including Mr. Lafleur who is the new vice-principal.

On Friday, September 7, the first meeting for anyone interested in Vocal Group was held. If you are interested in being a part of Vocal Group and didn’t attend the meeting, please speak to Mr. Theijsmeijer.

Speaking of music…. Why did the music teacher need a ladder? To reach the high notes.

On Monday, September 10, an assembly was held in the cafeteria. All the staff of MSS were introduced to students. Two guest speakers, Danny Lamb and Em Jordan were present for the assembly. Danny Lamb sang for the students and staff before speaking about inclusivity, accessibility and how words have power. Em Jordan sang a few songs including her latest single, ‘House of Cards.’

On Thursday, September 13, staff and students wore pink to stand up against bullying. A sea of pink could be seen throughout the school in support to those who have been or are being affected by bullying.

Also on Thursday, September 13, a video was played during lunch period for students. The video was advertising the Full Value Fitness Challenge fundraiser that is going to be held on September 29 at MSS. Proceeds will go to support local Pee-Wee and Atom Panther Hockey. If anyone one is interested in participating, first runs are at 9:30 am. If you have any questions please contact Mr. Balfe.

Friday, September 14 was Freeze Friday! Free freezies were available in the cafeteria at lunch.

Monday, September 17 was Picture Day! Everyone came to school ready to smile for the camera!

On Thursday, September 20, a handful of students will be attending We Day in Toronto. We Day is an unparalleled celebration of young people committed to making a difference.

The Mustangs have been very busy over the last couple of weeks. Many teams and clubs are starting up. Boys’ volleyball tryouts started the first week of school as well as girls’ basketball tryouts. Practices have been running at lunch and after school.

Cross country practices have also started. Anyone that is interested, grab your running shoes and join! The first after  school practice was on Monday, September 10.

SHARE/Go Green has started up for the year! Meetings are held Wednesdays with Mrs. Bauer.

Student council still has some positions to be filled. Forms for grade representatives were due on September 13. If you want to join student council and fill some remaining positions, please speak to a staff member or a member of student council.

Joke of the week: What happened when the wheel was invented? It caused a revolution!

Upcoming events include, We Day in Toronto, MHCC Headstrong, Full Value Fitness Challenge and a P.D. Day!

Until next time, “Dream and Believe. Learn and Achieve!”
