MANITOULIN—Manitoulin curling fans will soon have the chance to meet Olympics and two-time Canadian Brier champion Brad Jacobs.
Mr. Jacobs will be taking part in a special meet and greet in Gore Bay on Friday, August 15, and then will be taking part in another meet and greet at the Assiginack Curling Club annual Memorial Golf tournament (an event he will be taking part in) on Saturday, August 16. At both events he will be bringing the Brier Tankard trophy from his recent 2025 Montana’s Brier victory (having also won in 2013). He was also skip of the team that won the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Announcements were posted online by both Manitoulin Transport and Assiginack Curling Club of Mr. Jacobs’ visit. Manitoulin Transport has been a sponsor of Team Jacobs for several years.
Jeff Smith of Manitoulin Transport explained, “Manitoulin Transport has been sponsoring Brad’s team for several years, when he was briefly with the Jordan Chandler team, the Reid Carruthers team out of Manitoba and now the skip of the Alberta team (which includes Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert), which won the Brier this year.”
“The Alberta team is a super team, they are pretty amazing curlers,” said Mr. Smith. “They ended up winning the Brier this year. We are fortunate as a company to have our logo on Team Jacobs uniforms, and our company also sponsors all the Grand Slam events.”
Mr. Smith said he had received a text from Mr. Jacobs who said, “I would love to visit the Island with the Montana’s Brier Tankard Trophy. I am looking forward to meeting curling fans on the Island.”
Originally Mr. Jacobs, who is from Sault Ste. Marie, skipped a rink that included his two first cousins E.J. and Ryan Harnden.
Melanie Carr of Manitoulin Transport and the Assiginack Curling Club said Manitoulin Transport is proud to welcome Mr. Jacobs to Gore Bay on Friday, August 15 for a special meet and greet at Watersedge Pub and Restaurant (1 Water Street in Gore Bay) from 1-4 pm. Mr. Jacobs will be joining the Assiginack Curling Club’s annual Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, August 16 at Rainbow Ridge Golf Course in Manitowaning, with another meet and greet from 2-4 pm following the tournament. Mr. Jacobs will be participating in the tournament.
The Assiginack Curling Club Memorial Golf Tournament is a four-person scramble format event, with mixed, men’s and ladies’ teams ($400 per team), with all proceeds going to support the curling club. To register your team, contact Peter Bond at 705-210-0528 or pbond_74@live.ca
