TEHKUMMAH—The work may have been delayed a bit due to the downpour on Saturday morning, but once the rain had let up the Dave Bowerman and Howard Debassige from D & L Contracting and Cement Finishing got the latest set of brackets and banners featuring Tehkummah veterans up on poles throughout the community (including South Baymouth).
“It was a professional and quality installation,” said veterans banner project co-organizer Barbara Flaherty. “We are so pleased with the great work being done by Dave and the volunteers who are helping with this project.”
Among the volunteers was Tehkummah Mayor John Deforge. “Mayor John Deforge worked all day assisting with brackets, banners, supplies and traffic control,” confirmed Ms. Flaherty.
It was a very full day for everyone, but Ms. Flaherty expressed satisfaction that the banners were up in time for May 8, Victory in Europe Day and will stay up until D-Day, June 6.
“It is important to honour our veterans,” said Ms. Flaherty, “we must never forget the thousand of Canadians that died to keep Canada strong and free. The veteran banners are up for May 8 Victory in Europe 1945,80 years ago and will stay up until after D Day June 6—when we remember the thousands that died on the beaches of Normandy.”
“It was a very emotional day, especially when my dad’s banner went up in front of what was once his parents’ home in Tehkummah,” she said. “So, thankful for all the support from the community. I am feeling so privileged to have been involved in this project.”
