Bring Mom to the vintage sewing machine show Saturday

TEHKUMMAH—If sewing is one of your superpowers, you are not going to want to miss the Vintage Sewing Machine Show on Saturday, May 10 10 am to 2 pm at the Tehkummah Senior’s Triangle Club at 468 Hwy 542A.

“This all came about because Jennifer Graham took a picture of myself, her mother and another friend meeting with our antique featherweights.” Susan Hart, Tehkummah’s Librarian, said. “She sent the picture to The Expositor and it was published with a bit of a story. Jennifer was very excited by our machines, and she said, ‘you should do what they do with vintage car shows and have a sewing machine show.’ We kind of chuckled about that, but there was so much response from people, because of that picture in the paper, and those old machines,” Ms. Hart said.

The Tehkummah Library likes doing community events and, in thinking about something new, the idea for a Vintage sewing machine show suddenly became a reality. Mother’s Day seemed like the perfect time for the show. Everything fell rapidly into place once the hall was booked. “The volunteer response was immense.” Ms. Hart said. “We’ve gotten donations from sewing shops for door prizes and for exhibits. It’s been amazing. We have vendors coming, and we kept it completely for people who want to sew. So, it’s for fabric, notions, patterns, sewing machines and parts. We have someone coming who makes attachments for older machines; we have somebody coming who refurbishes machines. There are people coming who just want to show off their machines. There are a few people who are going to give demonstrations.”

There will be a silent auction, with proceeds going to Tehkummah First Response, and lunch and refreshments will be available, with the proceeds supporting Tehkummah’s Amish School building fund.

Even those who may feel challenged by sewing can still appreciate the beauty and durability of these machines, and the demonstrations performed with them may even be inspirational. As it is Mother’s Day weekend, it’s a perfect opportunity to take your mom, your aunt or a friend to see this amazing collection of vintage machines and enjoy lunch to boot. Come out and support this one-of-a-kind show, hosted by the Tehkummah Library.
