MINDEMOYA—Proceeds from the 32nd annual Blizzard Open Golf Tournament have been donated to the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary towards needed hospital equipment at the Manitoulin Health Centre (MHC).
“We raised $5,500 for the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary (MHA) to be put towards new ventilators (at the hospitals) which cost around $40,000 each,” said Karen Cranston, one of the organizers of the golf tournament along with Steve Shaffer. They presented the donation to members of the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary on Wednesday of last week. She pointed out MHC is looking toward raising the funds, with two ventilators required at both hospital sites.
“First off, we would like to thank everyone for coming out to participate in the Blizzard Open,” said Mr. Shaffer at the tournament awards ceremony, held September 13 at Brookwood Brae Golf Course in Mindemoya. “We had 22 teams and 88 players, so a full number of players took part. The funds we raise go to the Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliary.”
“It has been a great day, and we thank all of you for your support,” said Ms. Cranston. “Thanks to all who participated, we could not do it without you! Hopefully see you again next year.”
In the tournament, the winners in the men’s division included the team of Logan Middleton, John Seabrook, Ben Dewar and Rylan Carrick which posted an 18-hole score of 62 (10 under par).
The winning team in the women’s division, with a score of 79, included Ellen Holroyd, Colleen Willoughby, Karen Turgeon and Lise Gilbault.
The winner of the mixed division was the team made up of Kyra and Al Lanktree, Kennedy Lanktree and Devin Lockeyer with a score of 64.
Winners of the card draw included Dave Henderson, Ian Williamson, Ken Leask and Jamie Farquhar while the winners of the men’s and ladies shot closest to the rope was won by Al Murdock and Ellen Holroyd.
“Unfortunately, there was not a winner of the two possible chances at the $10,000 hole in one prize. Maybe next year,” said Ms. Cranston.
“Thanks, and much appreciation to our prize sponsors for your generous contributions, including Mindemoya Home Hardware, Mindemoya Foodland, M’Chigeeng Freshmart, Wilson’s Corner Store, Mindemoya Bank of Montreal, Brookwood Brae Golf Course and Van Horn Insurance for sponsoring our two $10,000 hole in one prizes,” said Ms. Cranston.
“Thanks also to our hole sponsors, your contributions were much appreciated as well: Wahl Water, Leanne Lewis Royal Lepage North Heritage Realty, D.A. Williamson and Sons Hardware, Manitoulin Meats, Netti’s Manitoulin Espresso, Rylan’s Clothing, Eagleowl Party Rentals, Jakes Home Centre. A special thanks to Kelly and her staff at the clubhouse for a delicious steak dinner with all the fixings. Also, a special thanks to the ground crew for their help; and excellent course, and to Justin Lockeyer for organizing the Texas Horseshoe game (won by Ron McKinley),” said Ms. Cranston.
Ms. Cranston also recognized, “Our volunteer Christie Deschamps for scrutinizing our hole in one, sitting safely in the trees for half the day!”
“Thanks to all who participated, we could not do it without you! Hopefully we will see you again next year,” added Ms. Cranston.
