Wiky Road Race!

The 53rd annual Wiky Road Race took place on Sunday. Eric Leishman was second at 35:54.

Mountain biking Mustangs!

The Manitoulin Mountain bike team hosted the third race of the high school mountain bike series at McLeans Park in Assiginack on October 2nd. It was a perfect fall day for racing, and the park was buzzing with 66 riders along with their families, friends, and coaches.

In the Novice division, Nathan Quackenbush continued his dominance with a third consecutive first-place finish. David Joyce and Jonah Moffat also had strong rides, finishing 10th and 16th respectively.

In the Senior division, Bradley Slaght turned in his best performance of the season with a 2nd-place finish. He was followed by Isaac Quackenbush in 7th, Jacob Swartz in 13th, and Jeffrey Harper in 17th. Both Manitoulin teams placed second in the team standings on the day.

The fourth and final race of the season will take place October 10th at Kivi Park, where the overall season standings will be decided. Congratulations to Coaches, Caroline Black and Ben Quackenbush!

Rowing Islanders

Manitoulin kids are never far from water, even in university! Congratulations to four Island rowers who were all at the Head of the Trent regatta in Peterborough over the weekend. Hats off to Zoe Redmond, Brooke Gibeault, Zavi Mara and Morgan Green!

Paper King catch-up

The NOJHL’s Espanola Paper Kings have rolled out of the gate with an impressive 6 and 4 record that places them in second place in the 12 team league! Wiikwemkoong’s Ashton Pitawanakwat is one player that is providing the Kings with their offensive punch. Ashton currently sits with 10 points in just eight games played and is fifth in team-scoring. This is no small feat as his teammates Joseph Coates and Cameron Menard are first and third in all, NOJHL scoring. Have a great season, Ashton!

67’s Kohyn!

Kohyn Eshkawkogan and his Ottawa 67’s have only played four games but have a perfect record thus far. Kohyn himself is in rare company with his point-per-game record putting him in the top-ten of blue-liner scoring!

Then and Now

Remember, you can’t spell gregarious without the Greg! In the case of Whitefish River’s Greg ”Deer-legs” Sutherland, the definition is textbook. Greg is the always smiling, Birch Island gas-bar ambassador and shameless, Maple Leaf promoter who regularly posts jokes, pictures and videos that find their way to many of our newsfeeds.

This week, Greg posted a Then and Now post of a Sudbury Star picture of him winning the Ramsey Tour half-marathon way back in the day next to a newer pic of him running. Perhaps, thanks to the wonders of modern photography, he even looks younger! Greg would undoubtedly say he gets better looking every year as well! Keep on running, Greg.
