Grant Moggy

1951 – 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Grant (Nelson) Moggy at the age of 74 years, who passed away suddenly on Monday, December 8, 2025. Grant was born to George and Sarah Moggy of Manitowaning on May 16, 1951. The youngest of five boys. He is predeceased by brothers, Robert (Bev), Arthur (Winnie also predeceased) and Jim (Sue). Survived by his brother Mervyn (Karen). Grant leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Nancy (Leeson), son Darren, daughter Clarissa, daughter-in-law Jenn, and grandsons Elliot and Emmet, who were the light of his life.

Grant spent much of his career driving a Petroleum truck for Manitoulin Livestock Co-op out of Manitowaning. When the Co-op closed, he joined New North Fuels (a division of Manitoulin Transport), where he worked until his diagnosis of bladder cancer, the month before his 65th birthday. Thanks to his Oncologist, and Urologist in Sudbury, and numerous chemo treatments Grant was sent to Sunnybrook Hospital, where Dr. Nam performed a major surgery, which gave him a cancer-free report shortly after. Earlier this year Grant learned that he had Stage 4 kidney disease. With only one kidney remaining after chemo and surgery, the prognosis was not good, but he continued his courageous battle with illness as he had done before.

In his younger years he was active with a softball team and a sportsman’s hockey team in Manitowaning. When he retired from those sports he took to the curling rink for curling and curffeling. Grant’s greatest passion was hunting and fishing. Going north to moose hunt with his buddies was the highlight of his year. Few moose were ever harvested, but they shared many laughs and good times together. A favourite saying was always: “What happens at moose camp stays at moose camp!!” Grant enjoyed fishing in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. Nancy would go with him too, but only in the summer, standing outside in the winter trying to catch a fish was not her idea of fun!

Family and friends will not soon forget Grant’s response when asked how he was doing? He would always reply: 60/40!!! Depending on the day he could be either side of that split.

Cremation has taken place, and as per his wishes there will be no service. A private family/friends celebration may be held in summer 2026.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Simple Wishes of the North for their support during this difficult time.

Cremation services provided by Simple Wishes of the North, Sudbury and Crystal Crematorium.
