M’CHIGEENG—The 56th annual Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) awards ceremony was a record setting one, thanks to the generosity and support of Manitoulin Island individuals, businesses, service groups, community groups and organizations.
“I hope that all the MSS graduating students here tonight know how much the local community is behind all of you. And wherever your path takes you remember the support you have received from the community of Manitoulin Island,” stated MSS Principal David Wiwchar, master of ceremonies for the awards night held in December at MSS.
“This year a record amount of donations were made, over $75,000 (through the Manitoulin Student Aid Fund),” said Mr. Wiwchar.
After the student processional and welcoming remarks, O Canada was led by Taylor Goodfellow accompanied by MSS teacher Chris Theijsjmeijer.
Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) trustee Lisa Corbiere-Addison provided greetings on behalf of the board and First Nations trustee Linda Debassige. She also brought greetings, “On behalf of Jim Belanger, MP for Sudbury East-Manitoulin-Nickel Belt who was unable to be here tonight. In his remarks he said this milestone references years of hard work on the part of the students, parents, teachers, staff etc.”
“These grants/bursaries being given out are investments in the future and strength of the region,” read Ms. Corbiere-Addison. MP Belanger wrote, “As MP I am proud of the talent and ambition students on Manitoulin display. You are our future.”
RDSB Trustee Addison-Corbiere said, “on behalf of Trustee Linda Debassige and myself I would like to welcome school staff, welcome home all our student graduates, their parents/guardians, and the many individuals, businesses, groups and organizations who have generously supported these students.”
“The Manitoulin Student Aid Fund has been in existence since 1969,” said Trustee Corbiere-Addison. “Through donations over $75,000 has been provided this year, thanks to our very generous community, and the volunteers who work so hard through the student aid fund committee. This support is very much appreciated.”
“I hope all of our graduates see the actions of kindness and support they have received, toward their education,” continued Trustee Corbiere-Addison. “You as students will have a truly incredible impact in the future, around the world. Don’t forget where you come from and give back to the community as so many others have.”
The donations are distributed to the graduating students of MSS who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary program.
Daniel Koziar, superintendent of schools (RDSB) said, “it is a pleasure to be here with the graduates of MSS. I am so excited to be here, and to be fortunate to be in a community so gracious and supportive to its students.”
Mr. Wiwchar thanked all the groups, individuals, businesses and organizations who have graciously donated funds toward the Student Aid Fund, and the MSIA committee for their tremendous efforts.
Presentation of awards were read by Principal Wiwchar, vice-principal Steve Doane and vice-principal Rachel Goodfellow.
“The future is yours, and we wish all of you the best,” stated Principal Wiwchar. “For all our alumni one word for you to keep in mind: Optimism. Hold on to this no matter what and that everything will turn out well now and in the future.”
“It is so good to see all of you’re here tonight,” said Principal Wiwchar. “We wish you the very best and safe travels back to university/college.”
