Column: MHC Matters

Manitoulin Health Centre

Manitoulin Health Centre has had an exciting and productive few months, marked by community support, major achievements, and continued dedication to rural healthcare excellence.

Smart Infusion, Smarter Care Campaign Reaches Goal

We are proud to share that MHC has successfully reached its $350,000 fundraising goal for the Smart Infusion, Smarter Care campaign. This milestone was achieved through the incredible generosity of our community, donors, and partner organizations.
These funds will allow MHC to implement new smart infusion pumps at both hospital sites, improving medication accuracy, patient safety, and clinical efficiency. Staff training is underway, and implementation will begin this December.
On behalf of the entire organization, I extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this success.

Supporting Future Healthcare Professionals

This fall, MHC welcomed Georgia Roy, a Manitoulin Secondary School co-op student, who is gaining hands-on experience across several hospital departments. Initiatives like this reflect our commitment to encouraging youth learning and inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals right here on Manitoulin Island.

New Strategic Plan: Strengthening Rural Healthcare

Our newly launched 2025–2028 Strategic Plan sets a clear path for the next three years, focusing on patient experience, health equity, staff well-being, and system sustainability. Developed with input from staff, Indigenous partners, and community members, the plan reinforces MHC’s vision of accessible, high-quality care close to home. Learn more at mhc.on.ca/strategic-plan.

Leadership Transitions

This quarter, MHC recognized the retirement of Dr. Stephen Cooper, whose more than 30 years of service have left a lasting legacy of compassion and innovation. His leadership helped advance integrated care and virtual health programs across our region.
We are also pleased to welcome Dr. Steven Daniel as our new Chief of Staff, effective September 2025. Dr. Daniel brings a wealth of clinical expertise and leadership experience and will be instrumental in guiding our continued focus on collaboration, quality, and patient-centered care.

Community Support and Auxiliary Efforts

The Little Current and Mindemoya Hospital Auxiliaries continue to demonstrate remarkable dedication. Their fundraising efforts — from muffin breakfasts to market booths — have raised thousands of dollars in support of hospital equipment and programs, including generous contributions to the infusion pump campaign. Both Auxiliaries are already planning their popular Cookie Walk and other festive events for the coming holiday season.

Patient Care & Operations Update

MHC continues to make progress in key areas of patient care and operations:

Laboratory Services achieved successful re-accreditation

The Pharmacy Department received commendation for ongoing work in medication safety.

Physiotherapy, Food Services, and Nursing welcomed new and returning staff members, strengthening our teams.

Over the past quarter, MHC supported 6,600 emergency visits, 3,600 lab visits, and 385 visiting specialist appointments — ensuring patients can continue to access essential care locally.

Split the Pot Lottery

MHC is proud to participate in the Split the Pot Lottery, where proceeds directly support patient care at the local level. Participants can enter weekly draws and support our hospital by selecting Manitoulin Health Centre at checkout at on.splitthepot.ca.

Commitment in Challenging Times

As we face challenging times ahead with limited funding across the hospital sector, I want to assure our community that our commitment remains unwavering. We will continue to advocate for care close to home and for the essential role that rural hospitals play in the health of our region.
We are incredibly proud of our dedicated team and deeply grateful for the ongoing support of our community — both are at the heart of what sustains us. Guided by our values of Respect, Passion, and Truth, our Board and Executive Team remain committed to navigating these pressures responsibly while continuing to provide the high-quality, compassionate care our community deserves.

Board of Directors Update

Did you know that MHC is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, composed of community members from across Manitoulin Island who bring a wide range of experience in healthcare, business, education, and community service? The Board also includes First Nations representation, ensuring the diverse perspectives and voices from across the Island are reflected in decision-making and in shaping the future of local healthcare. The Board works collaboratively with hospital leadership to set strategic direction, ensure fiscal accountability, and uphold MHC’s mission of providing accessible, high-quality care close to home.
Dennis McGregor, Chair of the MHC Board of Directors, leads this dedicated group as they continue to guide our organization through both opportunities and challenges with wisdom and a shared commitment to the well-being of our patients and communities.

As we look ahead to the winter season, I want to thank our staff, physicians, volunteers, and community partners for their dedication and resilience. Every achievement shared here reflects teamwork, community spirit, and our shared commitment to the health and well-being of the people of Manitoulin Island.
Together, we continue to build a stronger, more connected healthcare system — one that truly reflects the heart of this community.
