BIRCH ISLAND—A by-election is underway to fill a vacancy on Whitefish River First Nation band council following the passing of long-time councillor (and former chief) Leona Nahwegahbow earlier this spring. In accordance with the First Nation’s election code, the by-election must be held within 45 days of the position being declared vacant. The vacancy was declared on February 24 and an electoral officer was appointed.

A nomination meeting was held on March 4 with six nominees, who then had until the following Friday to accept their nominations. Nominated were Carl Cywink, Caroline Jacko, Gail Jacko, Caralyn (Cara) McGrgor, Valarie MacGregor and former chief Frankin Paibomsai (Shining Turtle).

It was unclear at publication whether any candidate had declined the nomination.

Mail-in ballots have been distributed, and By-Election Day is set for April 4, 2026.
