Wiikwemkoong High School celebrates 2025 Awards Christmas Gala

WIIKWEMKOONG—The 27th Wiikwemkoong High School Christmas Awards Gala celebration ‘Pathways to Greatness’ took place on Friday, December 5. Master of ceremonies Jillian Peltier provided opening remarks and took the audience through the award presentations following a roast beef dinner catered by Prepped Manitoulin.

Canada and the World Awards, sponsored by John and Jenniger Capin, and presented to students with the highest achievement in a Canadian Studies Course went to: Intermediate Javier Salas-Cooper; and Senior Grace Pitawanakwat.

The Business Award, sponsored by Enaadmaagehjik and presented to a student with the highest achievement in a business studies course went to Trinity Cheechoo.

The Trades Award, sponsored by Enaadmaagehjik and presented to a student with the highest achievement in a trades related course went to Allison Abel.

The Media Award, sponsored by Enaadmaagehjik and presented to a student with the highest achievement in a trades related course was presented to Hope Eshkibok and Hailey Trudeau.

The Hospitality Award, sponsored by Enaadmaagehjik and presented to the student with the highest achievement in a Hospitality related course went to Jessica Wemigwans.

The Ross Trudeau Memorial Creative Arts Award, sponsored by an anonymous donor, and presented to a student who demonstrates achievement in the arts went to Jessica Wemigwans.

The Mooseguy Memorial Land Based Award, also sponsored by an anonymous donor, presented to a graduate who shows interest in Land Based Learning went to Carmine Wemigwans.

The Helen M. McGillivray Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by the estate of Alexander M. McGillivray baa, presented to a student who displays commendable creativity in their educational endeavours was presented to Hudson Jocko and Deea Peltier-Simmonds.

The Mathematics Scholar Awards, sponsored by Wikwemikong Health Centre and presented to students with the highest achievement in each grade level for mathematics were presented to: Grade 9 Trinity Cheechoo and Grade 10 Marquise Roy and Cruz Taibossigai; and Grade 11 Annika Abel.

The Co-operative Education Award, sponsored by Andrew Manitowabi Group and presented to a student with the highest achievement in the Co-operative Education Program went to: Nicho Simmons.

The Manitoulin Nature Club Bursary sponsored by Manitoulin Nature Club and presented to a student who has made a tangible contribution to the Land-Based Learning Program went to Emery Manitowabi-Cooper.

The Little Current Royal Canadian Legion Award, sponsored by Little Current Royal Canadian Legion Branch 177 and presented to a graduate pursuing post-secondary education went to Shaye Ominika and Hope Eshkibok.

The Mackenzie Nodin Peltier Award, sponsored by: Jillian and Lanny Peltier and family, presented to a student who demonstrates resilience and perseverance, was presented to Mikayla Denis-Servant.

The Giizhgok Beegaeek Dedication Distinction Award, sponsored by Rachel and Todd Lewis, presented to a student who demonstrates dedication and commitment to their education went to Gian Dube, Adam Enosse, Tryton Kanasawe and Rosemary Roy.

The Hairstyling and Aesthetics Award, sponsored by Shears to a New You and presented to a student with the highest achievement in the Hairstyling & Aesthetics Course went to Meesah Ritchie and Tenille Shawanda.

The Life Skills and Class Participation Award, sponsored by Wikwemikong Community Living, and presented to a student in the Life Skills class with the best participation throughout the year went to Indiana Flamand-Pitawanakwat.

The Manitoulin Expositor Award, sponsored by The Manitoulin Expositor and presented to a student in the workplace pathway with the highest achievement in a Workplace English Course went to Allison Abel.

The Wiikwemkoong Anishinaabe Aadiziwin Lakkigamig Art Award, sponsored by Wiikwemkoong Anishinaabe Aadiziwin Nakkigamig and presented to a student who demonstrates excellent skill and technique in all art forms went to: Junior Patience Manitowabi and senior Mackenzie Trudeau.

The First Nations Science Award sponsored by Wiikwemkoong Anishinaabe Aadiziwin Nakkigamig and presented to a student with the highest achievement in a First Nations Studies Course went to Cruz Tiabossigai.

The Parent Council Attendance Awards, sponsored by Wikwemikong High School Parent Council, presented to student in each grade with the best attendance for the school year went to: Grade 8 Julie King Shawana; Grade 9 to Jolton Pitawanakwat; Grade 10 Annika Abel; Grade 11 Hudson Jocko; and Grade 12 Landon Meade-Pangowish.

Academic Excellence Awards, sponsored by Wikwemikong chief and council and presented to students with the highest overall grade average in each grade went to: Grade 8 Mylah Trudeau; Grade 9 Trinity Cheechoo; and Grade 10 Annika Abel, Grade 11 Hudson Jacko and Grade 12 Kiera Recollet-Trudeau.
“Chi-Miigwech to our Christmas Gala Award sponsors Candi Cheechoo, Melissa Cooper, Rachel Lewis, Jillian Peltier, Sheri Wabanosse, the Wikwemikong High School maintenance staff and Wiikwemkoong students for decorating the gym,” said Wiikwemkoong Board of Education Superintendant Nicole Peltier in her closing remarks.
