Southeast Lions Club Summerfest, this weekend in Manitowaning, honours the late Lion Lori Case

MANITOWANING—Across Manitoulin mechanics of all shapes, sizes and ages are gearing up for one of the most anticipated events of the year—the Southeast Lions Club Summerfest demolition derby on Sunday, July 20 (gates open at 11 am), but there is a host of events that help make Summerfest the go-to Island event from July 18 to 20.

This year the event has a bittersweet flavour as it is being dedicated in honour of a longtime community volunteer—and a Christmas in July theme.

“This year we are dedicating Summerfest to Lion Lori Case,” said organizer Lisa Hallaert. “She was a longtime dedicated volunteer for just about everything going on in the community. She passed away this past year.”

Ms. Hallaert noted that the Summerfest ball tournament, the Jim Case Memorial Tournament, is named in honour of Ms. Case’s late husband.

“Christmas was Lori’s favourite time of the year,” said Ms. Hallaert, “so, we decided to make this year’s theme ‘Christmas in July.’ That theme will be reflected in the decorations, promotions and the parade.

“We have a lot going on throughout the weekend,” she said. “The Friday night starts off with a free family glow dance from 6 to 8 pm and then it’s time to party in the pavilion with Rural Roots until midnight.”

Saturday attendees can start out the day with a pancake breakfast at the Knox United Church starting at 9 am, followed by the parade at 11 am.

Registration for the popular truck pull also begins at 11 am, with the pull to follow. Local music will start up at 1 pm in the pavilion and go on until 3 pm, while kids’ activities will be in full swing from noon until 4 pm.

“This year we are doing something different with live music at the dance,” said Ms. Hallaert. “Wheelhouse will be playing from 9 pm to 1 am.”

On Sunday, the aforementioned demolition derby will take place, with registration starting at 10 am. “This year we are trying something different with vans taking part,” she said. “That should be really entertaining; they smash up good.”

All through the weekend there will be beer gardens at various locations, with a barbecue serving up burgers and hot dogs. Manitoulin Minor Hockey Association will be selling snacks in the pavilion.
