New Manitoulin Mahem soccer squad launched!

While the NEMI Soccer League continues to increase its numbers over the years, there has also been a core group of competitive kids that wants to play even more and enter off-Island Tournaments. Enter the Manitoulin Mahem!

The traveling team, featuring 15 players from across the Island has just entered their first tournament in Eliot Lake. The Mayhem, has focussed on their team defense and it paid off launching them into the championship game where they lost in a shoot-out!

Coach Mathieu Page has managed to field the team with a lot of leg-work, including getting the fledgling club insured with his kudos for Mindemoya’s VanHorn Insurance. Entering a new team into the an established league, in Sudbury for instance is costly with estimates around $15K! The new team is hoping to don some snappy new jerseys for upcoming games and hoping to secure some local sponsorship so they can do that!

Page is so pleased with the enthusiasm for the venture from players: Brooke Varey # 2, Ada Correa # 8, Maximus Panamick #9, Finlay Card #7, Walter Weber #12, Simon Page #10, Addison Page #5, Simon Fessenden #1, Graeme Becks #4, Oliver Wilding #11, Mason Dedman #17, Brenna Pollard #3, Jack VanVolkingburgh #13, Eli VanVolkingburgh #16, Karmen Atkinson #15 and Chase Atkinson #14. The additional Coaches/managers include: Mitch Varey, Kimberley Weber and Danae Page. Good luck team, have fun!

Manitoulin Special Olympians Shine!

Our Special Olympians competed on two fronts last week in Brantford and the McMaster University campus. The opening and closing ceremonies, and meals were held at the Wayne Gretzky Sports Complex.

The Track and Field team, named the Manitoulin Striders qualified three athletes: Bruce Vanhorn, Kelsey Mellan and Matt Bedard and their Coach, Joanne Mellan.  The trio picked up some major hardware thanks to all their training. Bruce scooped up gold medals in the 100 m and in Mini javelin. Kelsey took home Gold in Mini javelin and Bronze in Shot put and the 200 m. Matt was Gold in the 800 m, Silver – 3,000 m and Silver 5,000m.

Meanwhile on the diamond, our Manitoulin Wolverines Softball squad fielded 12 athletes:

Tyler Madahbee, Emily Moggy, Jefferey Harper, Rebecca Strain, Aaron Nickol, Micheal Harper, Dylan Danville, Michael Cormier, William LeClair, Marybeth Taliotis, Jared Ladouceur and Mathieu Boullion. Their Coaches were Janet Anning, Sandra Graham and Roslyn Taylor.

The Wolverines won two of three games in the round robin. Then, they won the bronze medal in a nail biter against Ottawa. The Coaches are so proud of all these athletes, not just because of the medals but because of the sportsmanship and teamwork all weekend.

Summer Curling!

What a better place to be on these sweltering days than on the pebbled ice and some local curlers are doing just that! Devon MacKelvie and Spencer Johnston, junior curlers from the Providence Bay Curling Club, attended the Amethyst Curling Camp in North Bay from July 6-11. They joined 80 curlers, of ages 12-18 from across Ontario and Quebec joined by an incredible coaching team (111 combined Nationals appearances). They worked on their on-ice skills, including delivery and sweeping, as well as had off-ice training sessions and workouts.  They are all ready to hit the ice this fall!

In other curling news, Prov’s McDermid clan, Mom Bev and daughters Angela, Terri and Pamela attended the Kelowna Curling Club’s Summerspiel from July 4-6.  There were 60 teams from around the world with games spread out over 12 sheets of ice.  The team had 4 wins and 2 losses and came second in their pool! What an awesome experience!
