Kohyn to national selection camp!
Congratulations to Kohyn Eshkawkogan who has been invited to the Canada’s National Men’s Summer U18 Team selection camp to compete for a chance to represent Team Canada at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, set for August 11-16 in Brno, Czechia, and Trencin, Slovakia!
Pretty good little tune-up, tournament for his OHL, Ottawa 67’s camp, right? Nice job, Kohyn!
Elite volleyball player receives new honour!
Rockville’s Mya Balfe has been constantly improving her game every time she’s on the court thanks to her dedication to always playing against the best.
In her Manitoulin Secondary school experience she became a dominant hitter, striking fear into her opposition defenders!
She upped her game by joining the Northern Chill and Black Vortex club team, improving still. The videos posted of her “kills” are devastating for those over the net!
This summer she has attended regional training and Mya made the team Ontario black – 14 girls chosen from Ontario to make a team. She had to apply by sending in video footage back in March, then they do physical fitness testing results at Ontario provincials in April and they have people scouting and making final decisions on selection when watching the in-person play at Ontario provincial championships in April.
She was selected in the final round after seeing her play with her Chill team in April. They play at brock university starting on Wednesday!
Well deserved, Mya congratulations.
Aurel on top, again!
Wiikwemkoong’s Aurel Fox-Recollet repeated as the overall winner of the Conquer the Crater, 10km trail run this past weekend! Aurel is putting this and many other runs in his tank as training for the 2025 Indigenous Games. Not-bad, prep-work, Aurel!
Bruins get netted!
The Gore Bay Bruins are getting everything in order for this upcoming season. They are still offering early-bird registration by the way. They are also now the proud owners of new nets, purchased by Western Manitoulin minor hockey for the Bruins’ teams and President, Nick Lane is glad for the long overdue puck-catchers. Their sign-up continues and so far have about one-third of their anticipated players registered, which is great but they still need more. The organization will be running a hockey themed game as part of the kids’ activities at Gore Bay Harbour Days this Friday from 4:30 to 5:30. Sounds fun, check it out!
Badminton in Manitowaning!
The township of Assiginack had a fantastic turnout for the first night of their badminton camp hosted by certified coach, Mark Peltier of Noojmowin Teg Health Centre.
Camp is held every Thursday at 3:00-4:00 under 10 years, and 4:00-5:30 for youth, 11–14-year-olds.
Near-local, stars in FIBA!
Sudbury’s Syla Swords has one of those names that you remember. Many of our graduated secondary students will remember that name in every every intermural sport but basketball especially.
Syla scored 15 points to lead Canada past South Korea 70-58 Wednesday in the Round of 16 at the Under-19 FIBA Women’s World Cup.
Canada, which went 3-0 in group play, launched a 15-0 run in the first quarter to erase an early deficit and never looked back. The Canadians led 38-28 at halftime and outscored Korea 20-16 in the fourth to seal it.
Syla’s Father, Shawn was the Coach of the Laurentian University Voyageurs Men’s team until 2022 and now Coaches the Long Island Nets of the NBA ‘G’ league!
