The Tour, in its 47th year is an annual fundraiser for both the Laurentian University and Cambrian College cross-country teams.
In the 5K race, other Manitoulin runners featured Alan Wilkin running for his Laurentian University team finishing in 7th place. Nipissing Laker runner McKenzie Green also put in a great training run. David Joyce was the 2nd overall, 14-year-old. Congratulations to all.

McLeans Park 6-Hour relay!
The Breakaway Sports’ series finished over the long weekend at Assiginack’s McLean’s Park. Individuals on each team completed as many laps of the course over six hours to determine the winner. All the teams competing were in the mix and competitive. Finishing their 18th lap in 352 minutes was the team of Paul Guenette, Katie Reid, Peter Van Buren and Eddie Bauman. Just needing seven minutes longer was the foursome of Alex Anstice, Cameron Duff, Charlie Reid and Jimmy Duff in second.
Finishing in third place was the pair of Julian Luoma and Mani Cuza. Next was the quartet of Caroline Black, Nathan, Sarah and Rachel Quackenbush. Not far behind was the trio of Bill Slaght, Nathan Quackenbush and Bradley Slaght! Following them was the all-female triad of Allison Godwin, Olivia Luoma and Roslyn Godwin. That concludes the Breakaway Race series for this year, unless there is a Loppet or snowshoe event once the snow flies?
Local OHL player itching for season opener!
Kohyn Eshkawkogan of the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s had a strong pre-season with two points in three games. His mature, composed, play and strong skating are getting a lot of attention from NCAA D1 and NHL scouts.
He’s excited to start the season playing against Kingston on Sep. 19th and North Bay on September 26th. Similarly, for his home opener on Sep. 28th where almost 150 family, friends and fans from Manitoulin and beyond have confirmed to attend!
We are all pulling for you, Kohyn. Have a super season!
Los Angeles Kings nurtures its tenders
The NHL’s Los Angeles Kings have a good reputation of developing and protecting their goaltenders. This bodes well for Manitoulin rooted, Carter George who signed with the Kings after being selected in the second round of last year’s entry draft. Still Junior age, the Kings are expected to have Carter spend another year back in the OHL, currently with the middling, Owen Sound Attack.
Stories of NHL teams bumping-up netminders too soon are legion but the shielding strategy of the Kings will ensure Carter reaches his awesome potential. That future looks bright, especially with his international experience and a save percentage since his Under-16 days that has never dropped below 0.900! Enjoy your year, Carter!
Manitoulin Minor Hockey needs you!
The MMHA is still in the waiting game. It is a trickle-down process as Manitoulin’s local associations try to get their finalized numbers so Manitoulin can get their schedule together. They currently have a poll running on the number of games per season and are encouraging parents to cast their votes. The poll can be found on our website home page at manitoulinminorhockey.ca.
They will also be having Selects teams again this year. Right now, they would like to get the information out there that to be included with a Selects team as a player or bench staff you need to be part of the regular house league season to participate.
Couple of Ringers!
