GORE BAY—While it is also a fun tournament for participants, the annual Frosty Cup Benefit Hockey Tournament has helped many individuals/families across Manitoulin Island since its inception.
“At the end of the Frosty Cup tournament last year, we were able to help four individuals/families, distributing $20,000 raised through the tournament,” said Scott MacDougall, one of the organizers of the annual event. “We had enough funds that we were also able to support an individual on the east end of the Island in mid-year. That marked the first time we have been able to assist someone in mid-year.”
“The support we provide every year to individuals/families is broader than just assisting people in the Gore Bay area,” said Mr. McDougall. “Since the inception of the tournament, which started in 2014, (not taking place two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic), we have raised and distributed almost $110,000.”
“The last two years we have had extremely good response on the sponsor side for the tournament,” said Mr. McDougall.
The Frosty Cup Benefit tournament will take place December 19-21. Mr. McDougall noted the Gore Bay Rotary Club will be staffing the bar in the arena during the weekend, and volunteers are encouraged to help out. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 514 will be holding a benefit dance or karaoke night, upstairs in the Legion on December 20.
“We are already full with teams for the tournament, with eight in the men’s sportsman division, and four teams in both the 40 plus and ladies’ divisions.
