I hope everyone had a happy Halloween and isn’t still suffering from a candy-induced sugar high.
Don’t forget, everyone, that the clocks go back an hour this weekend! A time change for joke for you:
If it weren’t for spring forward and fall back, I would never do any exercise at all!
On Wednesday, October 27, MSS cross-country runners participated in NOSSA (Northern Ontario Secondary School Athletics) at St. Joseph Island. Xavi Mara placed seventh in the novice boys’ race. In the junior girls’ race, Maren Kasunich placed first with a time of 18 minutes and 44 seconds, Mackenzie Green came in fifth, and Annie Balfe followed closely behind in sixth. Brodie Pennie placed third in the junior boys’ race. The junior girls’ team made up of Maren Kasunich, Mackenzie Green, Annie Balfe and Morgan Green placed first as a team with their overall combined times qualifying them for OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations). OFSAA takes place on Saturday, November 6. Good luck at OFSAA, Mustangs!
Some other notable finishes by Mustangs were Andrew Cooper in the novice boys’ race and Patrick McCann and Orland Carter O’Hearn in the junior boys’ division. Alan Wilkin led the way in the senior boys’ division, with Julian Wemigwans, Jack Pennie and Landon Hare also showing solid finishes. Great job, runners!
Over the course of last week, students had the opportunity to bring in non-perishable food items and monetary donations to the Halloween for Hunger campaign. Each day, students’ homeroom class would collect and record the number of non-perishable food items that were brought in. The class with the most overall items combined at the end of each day was that day’s daily winner, and at the end of the week there was an overall winner. Tuesday, October 26 and Wednesday, October 27’s winner was Mr. Balfe’s 4U Functions. Thursday, October 28’s winner was Ms. Bauer’s 3U English class. And the overall winner for the week was Ms. Bauer’s 3U English class! Seventeen out of 20 homeroom classes participated, collecting over 485 cans and $1,218 in monetary donations for the week. This is the equivalent of over 2,800 non-perishable items that will all be donated to Manitoulin Family Resources. These totals do not include what was collected on Halloween night by students going around Island communities.
The Halloween festivities at MSS were a big success! All sorts of costumes were found roaming through the halls on Friday, October 29, making the costume contest extra spooky and fun. Then during each lunch period, students had the opportunity to carve a pumpkin that was generously donated by JD’s Manitoulin Garden Centre. Students channeled their inner artists creating some funny carvings, scary carvings and creative carvings.
Today, Wednesday, November 3 is the Grade 9 “Take Your Kids to Work” Day. Grade 9 students who filled out a permission form to be excused from classes today are currently at work alongside one of their parents, guardians or another chosen adult.
Joke of the week: Did you hear about the race between the lettuce and the tomato?
The lettuce was a head but the tomato was trying to ketchup.
Upcoming events include cross country OFSAA and so much more!
Until next time, Dream and Believe. Learn and Achieve!
