Plenty of champions to be found at the Island cross-country competitions

MANITOULIN—Little Current Public School (LCPS) is the Manitoulin Island elementary school cross-country running champions!

LCPS garnered a total of 16 points to take first place, followed by Charles C. McLean Public School (Gore Bay) in second with 15 points. Central Manitoulin Public School (Mindemoya) placed third with a team total of 12.5 points.

A total of eight schools and 230 runners (20 more athletes than took part last year) in the cross-country championships, held at Manitoulin Golf in Gordon/Barrie Island township on Thursday of last week.

C.C. McLean teacher Elizabeth Van Every, one of the event organizers, told all athletes and coaches at the awards ceremony, “We want to congratulate everyone here today. It has been a great day. We are really proud of everyone for taking part and giving it your best.” 

In the team division category, eight and under girls, LCPS was first followed by Assiginack Public School (Manitowaning), C.C. McLean, Pontiac (Wiikwemkoong), and CMPS from second to fifth respectively. In the boy’s division, C.C. McLean finished first, CMPS second, Assiginack third and Pontiac and LCPS in fourth and fifth, respectively.

C.C. McLean took first place in both the boys’ and girls’ 9–10-year-old division. In the girls’ division LCPS, Assiginack, CMPS and Pontiac finished second to fifth, respectively. In the boy’s division, CMPS was second, LCPS third, Pontiac fourth and Assiginack fifth.

CMPS lead the way in the girls’ 11- and 12-year-old division. LCPS was second, followed by Assiginack, Pontiac, C.C. McLean. In the boys’ division LCPS took top spot, followed by CMPS and C.C. McLean in second and third. Pontiac was fourth, with Assiginack fifth.

The 13 plus girls’ division saw C.C. McLean take first place. LCPS finished second, with CMPS third. In the boys’ division LCPS finished in first, followed by CMPS and C.C. McLean in second and third, respectively.

The individual medalists in the 8 and under girls’ division saw Maylee Wheale of C.C. McLean in first place, followed by Rowan McGale of LCPS second and Addie Fenton of Assiginack third. Adam Honess of C.C. McLean finished first in the boys’ division, with Declan Abitong of CMPS and Maverick Varey of LCPS second and third. 

Brinn Taylor of CMPS won the gold medal in the girls’ 9- and 10-year-old division. Rosie Wiwchar of C.C. McLean garnered a silver medal with Isabel Abbotossaway of LCPS third. On the boys’ side, Alex Woods, Dawson Honess and Arlo Menzies, all of C.C. McLean finished first to third.

Addison Page and Alyeana McDermid, both of Assiginack won the gold and silver medal, respectively, in the girls’ age 11-12 division. Rowyn Pfeifer of C.C. McLean was third. Pontiac school runner Memphis took the gold medal in the boys’ division, with Bray of Lakeview Elementary School (M’Chigeeng) and Landon Niclasson of CMPS finishing second and third.

In the girls’ age 13 plus division, Kailyn Inglis of LCPS won the gold medal, with Sydney Cunningham  and Emma Chaytor of C.C. McLean winning the silver and bronze medals. In the boy’s division, Boston Abbotossaway of LCPS earned gold with a first-place finish. Graeme Becks of CMPS was second while Xavier Panamick-Eshkawkogan of LCPS placed third.
