GORDON—The Manitoulin Golf men’s open championship flight winners were a father and son team.
Craig and Anthony Rogerson of Sudbury took the championship with a two-day, 36-hole score of 132, garnering a seven under par in the first round and five under par on day two. The tournament, which drew a total of 120 players, was held July 19-20.
For Craig Rogerson, this marks the third time he has been the winner of the championship flight, having won individually as a single player previously (when the tournament was a single player format), and with Dan Lefebvre in one tournament.
Finishing second in the championship flight was the team of Roddy and Curtis who posted a score of 137. The brother team of Cassidy and Patrick Payette finished third with a score of 138.
In the first flight, the team of Kevin Sullivan and Dan Lefebvre finished first with a score of 143. Through retrogression, the team of Tyler D. and Tyrone D. finished second, with Peter S. and Kennedy S. placing third with a score of 144.
In the second flight Kyle N. and Carson M. were first through retrogression, with the team of Al and Jake second. Finishing third was Marc Addison and Garret Gouge with a score of 148.
The third flight was won by Gord L and Richard B with a score of 151, while the fourth flight was won by Ray Bodson and Leon Mallette with a score of 157, the third consecutive year they have won this flight.
The champions of the fifth flight were Nathan B. and Grant Turner.
At the awards ceremony clubhouse manager Cheryl Deeg thanked everyone for taking part in the tournament, and her staff for all their hard work and efforts in putting on the tournament.
Craig Rogerson said, “I would like to toast Cheryl (Deeg) and her course and clubhouse staff, as well as the course staff for a great job in hosting the tournament, and to all the new participants and those who have played this tournament for many years.”
“I would also like everyone to raise a glass in memory of Jane Pummell (long-time clubhouse manager), who was a great friend, for all her efforts over many years—Cheryl will continue on for many more years,” said Mr. Rogerson.
“Jane (Pummell) was a wonderful woman, and she and her husband Arthur (on the golf course grounds crew) did a phenomenal job operating the clubhouse and course over many years,” said Ms. Deeg. “I have pretty big shoes to fill with Jane’s passing, and we all miss her dearly.”
