Column: Manitoulin Sporting Life

Manitoulin Mustang Mountain Bikers

The Manitoulin Secondary School mountain bike team kicked off their season at Kivi Park on September 18, with nine riders representing the island.
In the Novice division, Nathan Quackenbush dominated the field to take first place with a commanding lead. Teammates David Joyce (15th), Jonah Moffat (16th) and Waylon Hartin (20th) also turned in solid performances in their debut races.
Bradley Slaght led the team in the Senior division with a fifth-place finish, followed closely by Isaac Quackenbush in sixth. Jacob Swartz (19th), Jeff Harper (21st) and Cole Laidley (DNF) rounded out the Manitoulin contingent.
The next race will be held September 25 at the Walden trails in Naughton. Students interested in joining the team can speak with Ms. Caroline Black for more information.

Keen on Kohyn

“Keep an eye on Kohyn Eshkawkogan,” is the subtitle from an Ottawa Sun column on this season’s outlook on its OHL’s Ottawa 67’s. The column goes on to identify Kohyn as a Manitoulin Island product and member of the M’Chigeeng First Nation. It also pointed out that he became the first 67’s player to be named to the OHL’s First All-Rookie team since current Philadelphia Flyers star Travis Konecny 11 years ago.

Kohyn scored four goals along with 16 assists in 52 games, but his coach, Dave Cameron, is more concerned with the youngster’s development. In his interview with columnist Don Brennan, Cameron stated, “I just want his game to grow” and “He’s a little bit bigger, a little bit stronger, but we just need him to not get too far ahead of himself in terms of where he is as a player. Just continue to grow, build a lot of strength and his speed, his ability to see the ice, make a first pass and join the rush.”

Cameron has 30-plus years of coaching experience backing up his statement, having been behind the bench in the CHL, AHL, NHL and OHL as well as the National Junior and U-18 programs! Cameron will make sure Kohyn has every opportunity to fulfil his hockey wishes!

Carter George shines in Camp!

Catching up with Carter George after his excellent Los Angeles Kings’ camp brings more great prognostications. In his only game play of the Kings’ camp Carter played in the Rookie Faceoff game against the Anaheim Duck rooks, he was a star of the game, stopping 37 shots in a 4 -1 win.

Back in Owen Sound as a now OHL veteran, Carter does not get as much showcase time as an NHL signed goalie but what he did show, proved his worth again. In their pre-season, road-match against the Barrie Colts, Carter was named a star of the game turning aside 39 of 40 shots. In the only other action he saw, Carter played half the game for a Colts’ rematch, stopping eight of eight shots, helping the Attack to another win. In all, in his pre-season save-percentage, Carter is ‘batting’ 0.978!
