Column: MSS Kids in the Hall

Hi there! I’m Saramarie, your student journalist for this year. I’ll be keeping you in the loop on everything that is happening at MSS. I will be covering everything from championships and clubs to the spirit days.  Can you believe it? It is now mid-term – we are officially half way through semester 1.  School started two months ago, and MSS students are truly showing what it means to be champions.

Not to show off (on behalf of MSS) but we had two stellar runners who made it to OFSAA for cross country. Wyatt Wilson-Wright and David Joyce crossed the  finish line with incredible determination and insane perseverance. Wyatt placed 145 out of 278 senior boys runners.  David placed 189th out of 265 novice boys runners. Also, at OFSAA, Emery Watson & Ava Corbiere are competing in girls doubles tennis. They are ranked #2 in this provincial tournament based on previous OFSAA experience for both of them

If you walked past the gym this past week you would have heard cheering, whistles blowing, and a whole lot of school spirit. Our girls’ basketball team has shown great sportsmanship, spirit, and the Mustangs pride as they finished off their season. The girls’ basketball team really showed how to come together as one.

The junior and senior boys’ volleyball teams finished their season with the NSSSA finals. The junior boys played hard and gave it their all. They demonstrated lots of improvement and should be proud.  The team was led by captain Seam Zembal.  Also, the senior  boys’ volleyball team finished the regular season with a record of 7 – 4 – 1. They played in the NSSSA playoffs at Espanola High School last Wednesday, where they took the win in the semi-finals against the Elliot Lake Secondary School Atoms before taking on the hosting Espanola High School Spartans. The Spartans took the first two sets in close wins, before the Mustangs battled back to win the third. In the 4th set both teams were evenly matched but EHS closed out the set and thus the match, winning 3 – 1. So our Mustangs Sr. boys’ volleyball team finished in second place in NSSSA. This qualified them to head to E.S.C. Algonquin in North Bay next week to compete at ‘A’ NOSSA against some of the best teams in Northern Ontario.

If you are into basketball, there are boys’ senior and junior tryouts happening next week, as well as girls’ senior and junior volleyball tryouts. Let’s go Mustangs!!

Taking a short break from sports, this week wasn’t all about points and finish lines; it was about learning too. The first week of November is Treaty Week, which gives an awesome chance to learn about some Canadian history.  Students made wampum belts out of Lego, while others in their classes talked about the importance and history of treaties. In honour of Treaty Week and Indigenous Veteran’s Day, MSS had a whole school potluck feast at lunch on Thursday, November 6th. The mac and cheese was delicious.

Students in Grade 10 and some in grades 11 and 12 are getting ready for the Literacy Test on Wednesday and Thursday this week. They have been working on preparing and practicing steadily for the last few weeks.

The Manitoulin Metal robotics team came back from the STEMley Cup competition in Hamilton fired up and ready to learn.  Mr. Gray, the electrical mentor on the team and Bazi Mara, the electrical lead, worked with the build team on learning about soldering, crimping, and tinning in preparation for the coming robotics build season, while the media team created YouTube shorts and posts about the STEMley event and the robot. The 3 elementary robotics teams mentored by Manitoulin Metal are busy getting their models, code, and presentations ready for the December 6th showcase.

Our school had a couple of fundraisers for October and here is the scoop. SHARE / Go Green organized the annual Halloween for Hunger food drive to support families and students struggling with food security. The winners of the homeroom challenge were Mr. Zegil’s period 1 class Grade 9 Science class collecting 74 non-perishable food items and over $200 in monetary donations. They will celebrate with a pizza party next week.  In second place was Ms. Becks’ period 1 Grade 9 Science class with $198.50 in donations. In third place was Ms. Ferguson’s Grade 9 Geography class with 201 cans and $74 collected.  On Halloween night, students went out trick-or-treating for food drive donations and collected hundreds more non-perishable food items.  The organization team will be delivering the items to the Living Well Locker at MSS and MFR food.

Socktober was a fundraiser selling student designed socks for a good cause. The fundraiser raised $300 for people in need to have thermal socks for the upcoming winter seasons all together.

Headstrong is an MSS run program which is built to inspire students to become leaders, defeat stigma around mental health, and help promote  mental health awareness. This week Headstrong had a pop-up for bracelet making, which is great for de-stressing after or before classes.

The cast list for the MSS Musical came out and everyone is excited about rehearsals starting next week. The musical is Freaky Friday for anyone who missed it. Freaky Friday follows an overworked mother and her teenage daughter, who magically switch bodies. They have only one day to transform back to their old selves. The musical cast needs another dancer or two, and open auditions for grade 7 & 8 students interested in being a part of the show will take place at MSS on Saturday, Nov 15th. Contact bauery@rainbowschools.ca to book an audition time.

Tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 7-8:30), MSS will host an event called “Next Stop: Grade 9” for families and students of grade 8 to prepare for the grade eights upcoming high school year.

See you next week! Ciao!
